Can Your Spine Adapt to Stress?

What Are Intervertebral Discs?

  1. The Nucleus Pulposus (NP): The squishy centre that helps absorb pressure.

  2. The Annulus Fibrosus (AF): The tough outer layer that protects the nucleus.

  3. The Cartilage End Plates (CEP): The thin layers of cartilage on the top and bottom of each disc that help move nutrients in and out.


Can discs get stronger with stress?

A recent study looked at elite rowers to see how their spinal discs responded to intense training. Researchers found that the soft centre of the disc (the NP) temporarily increased in a protein called glycosaminoglycan (GAG). This protein helps the disc stay hydrated and resist compression.

However, the study showed this increase was temporary. When the athletes stopped training, GAG levels returned to normal. While this might sound like discs adapt to stress, scientists warn that it doesn’t mean they become stronger or heal from injuries. In fact, other studies show that intense physical stress, like repetitive heavy lifting, can lead to disc degeneration over time.
